Technical Project Manager I/II

Location: Remote

Job Type: Full-time

The Align Foundation accelerates scientific research by improving access to useful methods and data. We envision a world with abundant, openly available scientific data, and aim to make this world a reality with a new paradigm of collaborative, data-centric life science research. We support projects end-to-end, from roadmapping concepts, to facilitating large-scale data collection and sharing, and finally benchmarking the impact on the field through machine learning competitions.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Technical Project Manager to support our Growth-Based Quantitative Sequencing (GROQ-seq) program, a core experimental platform enabling high-throughput protein function measurements. This fully-remote role bridges scientific design and operational responsibilities, ensuring projects run efficiently from DNA design through execution. The Technical Project Manager will play a pivotal role in coordinating experimental workflows, overseeing DNA design logistics, managing external vendors, and supporting administrative operations for the GROQ-seq team.

The successful candidate will thrive at the intersection of science and operations, balancing the technical expertise and demands of DNA design with the organizational needs of vendor management and program administration. They will bring strong organizational rigor to keep complex GROQ-seq projects on track, while communicating effectively with scientists and external partners to translate project needs into actionable deliverables. With a detail-oriented mindset and strong problem-solving ability, they will ensure the accuracy of DNA design specifications, maintain clear documentation, and resolve challenges as they arise. Above all, the candidate will be adaptable and collaborative, excelling in a fast-paced, evolving biotech environment where both precision and flexibility are critical to success.

What You’ll Do

Project and Technical Management

  • Oversee portions of the day-to-day operations of the GROQ-seq program, ensuring timelines and milestones are met.
  • Partner with scientists and engineers to translate experimental goals into actionable DNA design strategies.
  • Coordinate sample tracking, sequencing runs, and data delivery schedules.
  • Optimize and expand the functionality of the E. coli GROQ-seq experimental platform.

DNA Design & Construct Developer

  • Support researchers in designing DNA constructs required for GROQ-seq experiments.
  • Manage design submissions, review pipelines for accuracy and completeness and submit finalized designs to cloning partners.
  • Implement standardized documentation practices for construct libraries and design iterations.

Vendor Procurement & Relationship Management

  • Act as liaison with DNA synthesis vendors, sequencing providers, and laboratory service partners.
  • Scope new CROs and vendors, communicating findings to the protein projects team.
  • Track vendor and partner performance and maintain cost-effective partnerships to support scaling needs.

Administrative & Operational Support

  • Coordinate and schedule meetings, project updates, and cross-team communications.
  • Prepare and collate slide decks for GROQ-seq team.

What We’re Looking For

Note that this section describes a nearly ideal candidate in order to provide insight into what
this job entails. The more of these that apply to you, the more likely we think you will be a
good fit for the role. Please don’t hesitate to apply even if you don’t feel like you’re a perfect
match!

  • Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Protein Engineering, Biological Engineering, or a related field (advanced degree a plus).
  • 2+ years of industry experience in project management, coordination, or operations within a life sciences setting.
  • Have 4+ years of hands-on experience designing DNA constructs for cloning, expression and/or synthetic biology applications, ideally for high throughput and/or library based approaches.
  • Proficient in molecular cloning strategies (e.g., Gibson, Golden Gate, etc.) and experienced with DNA design software tools such as SnapGene, Geneious, or equivalent.
  • Understand molecular biology principles such as codon optimization, promoter/terminator and RBS selection, trafficking sequences and vector backbone design principles.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and accuracy when working with DNA sequences and annotations.
  • Experience working with E. coli for protein engineering or synthetic biology applications.
  • The ability to travel occasionally for domestic and international events (eg: team meetings, conferences, and workshops).
  • A humble approach to collaboration and mentorship, including good listening skills, open-mindedness, receptivity to feedback, and flexibility.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with demonstrated success managing timelines and deliverables.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with varied stakeholders to ensure that project and organizational needs are met, including the ability to clearly communicate design choices and rationale.
  • Excitement for interdisciplinary field-building efforts, particularly within data-driven biology.

Why Join Us?

Working at Align as a data engineer has been a dream come true—I get to help build the future of biology through open, collaborative projects that accelerate research on biological foundation models. The work is both technically rewarding and deeply inspiring. The team’s shared mission and enthusiasm make it an incredible place to grow and make an impact. I couldn’t imagine a more important time to be doing this work.

Zach Sisson

Align is the first place I’ve worked where I can bring every part of myself to the table: strategist, science nerd, storyteller, builder. We move fast, dream big, and actually do the things we talk about. It’s rare to find a team this smart, collaborative, and aligned on purpose.

Naomi Hagelund

After finishing my PhD, I didn’t feel at home in the traditional 'academia vs. industry' path. I was looking for a space where I could do meaningful, innovative science without the pressure to publish constantly or prioritize profits over purpose. At Align, I’ve found that rare balance—freedom to explore exciting research questions, surrounded by brilliant teammates who are genuinely kind, mission-driven, and deeply collaborative.
